Independent Research Project: Advancing Diabetic Retinopathy Detection with AI

Jophy’s research project aims to enhance diabetic retinopathy (DR) detection through a novel ensemble learning model that quantifies prediction confidence, a critical factor in high-risk medical applications. This uncertainty-based approach allows low-confidence cases to be flagged for further review, improving diagnostic reliability. With her research, Jophy was able to present it at several science fairs, including the Jersey Shore Science Fair, Delaware Valley Science Fair (DVSF), New Jersey Academy of Science (NJAS), and the International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF). From Local Fair to International Fair: Jophy at the International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF)

Jophy's journey to the International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) began with her participation in the Delaware Valley Science Fair (DVSF), where she achieved first place in the Computer Science category and received the Excellence in Cardiovascular & Metabolism Research award from Johnson & Johnson. Her project, recognized for its impact and innovation, earned her one of 12 spots as a medalist to advance to ISEF, where she presented her research to an international audience. Competing among the world’s brightest young scientists, Jophy had the invaluable opportunity to engage with experts, receive feedback from esteemed judges, and connect with peers from diverse backgrounds. Cornell CURIE Academy: Advancing Knowledge in Programmable Plant Systems

In July 2024, Jophy was privileged to attend the CURIE Academy at Cornell University, a selective week-long program for high school girls who demonstrate exceptional leadership, science, and math skills. Awarded a full scholarship, Jophy was one of 45 to participate in a group research project on programmable plant systems. At the program’s conclusion, her group presented their findings and ideas to an audience of parents and professors, receiving valuable feedback that enriched their learning experience. Jophy’s experience was later highlighted in a Cornell Chronicle article, where she was quoted and mentioned. To read the article, click here.

Accessible Mentorship: Leading a Research Course

Jophy served as one of the co-leads for the Project CLERIS research course, an initiative designed to make research mentorship accessible to all students. In this role, she took on multiple responsibilities, including developing a comprehensive curriculum that would guide students through the research process, editing instructional videos, and personally filming four videos where she served as a research mentor. She also coordinated with other research mentors to ensure consistent quality and progress, supporting them throughout the course. Through the research course, Jophy helped democratize research opportunities, empowering students to confidently pursue their own scientific research.
