In this third and final post of my CURIE Academy series, I’m diving into the bigger picture—what the program taught me, the pros and cons of attending, and whether it’s the right fit for you. From personal growth and hands-on learning to the realities of the program’s one-week structure, I’ll share my honest reflections to help future scholars make the most informed decision. If you’re curious about how CURIE Academy could shape your STEM journey or looking for advice, this post is for you!

What CURIE Academy Taught Me

  1. Hands-On Learning Brings STEM to Life

CURIE Academy excels in providing immersive, project-based learning. Every activity, from mixing concrete to programming IoLT sensors, made abstract concepts feel tangible. For example:

    • IoLT Research: Using Arduino-based soil sensors to collect agricultural data showed how engineering directly impacts sustainability.

    • Synthetic Biology: Streaking yeast plates to create colorful patterns blended creativity with cutting-edge biology.

By actively engaging in these projects, I gained a deeper understanding of engineering’s potential to address real-world challenges.

  2. Confidence Through Community

One of the most surprising parts of CURIE was how quickly it felt like a second home. From the start, everyone was welcoming and supportive. The Program Assistants (PAs)—Cornell students themselves—were an incredible resource. Whether we were asking questions about campus life or Cornell’s academic programs, their insights gave us a firsthand look into life as a student at Cornell.

Even after the program ended, the sense of community stayed alive. To this day, our CURIE group chat is still active, and there's updates and texts there from time to time. CURIE isn’t just a weeklong experience—it provides you with a network of like-minded peers and mentors.

  3. Exploring Cornell and Building Connections

One of the standout aspects of CURIE was how much we got to explore Cornell’s beautiful campus. From walking tours and visits to spots like Triphammer Falls to evening strolls led by our RAs, we got an insider’s perspective on one of the nation’s top universities.

On top of that, we walked away with not only memories but also plenty of Cornell merch—two engineering T-shirts, a sleek water bottle, a lab notebook, and more. While these goodies weren’t the main focus, they added a personal touch to the experience and left us with keepsakes to remember the week by.

Even after CURIE ended, we received resources, advice, and connections that continue to help us today.

The Pros and Cons of CURIE Academy

Pros: What Makes CURIE Stand Out

  1. Immersive, Hands-On Learning: You’re not just sitting in lectures—you’re actively participating in engineering projects.

  2. Diverse Exposure: CURIE introduces you to multiple fields of engineering, making it perfect for students still exploring their interests.

  3. Community and Networking: From peers to Cornell professors, the relationships you build at CURIE last long after the program ends.

  4. Exploring Cornell: Walking around campus and talking to Cornell students gives you a real sense of college life.

  5. Lasting Impact: The resources, connections, and confidence you gain continue to help in the long run.

  6. Free Cornell Merch: While it’s not the main draw, the swag is a nice bonus that makes the experience even more memorable.

Cons: What to Consider

  1. Short Duration: With just a week, you might feel like you’re only scratching the surface of some topics.

  2. Cost: The program fee can be a barrier, although scholarships are available.

  3. Competitive Admissions: The application process is selective, so it’s important to put effort into your essays and recommendations.

  4. Research: While you do engage in research in this program, it is not the main focus and may not be best suited for those who are looking for extensive and advanced research experience.

Who Should Apply to CURIE Academy?

CURIE Academy is perfect for high school girls who:

  • Want to explore STEM fields and discover what interests them most.

  • Thrive in hands-on, collaborative environments.

  • Are curious about college life and want an insider’s view of a top university like Cornell.

  • Value diversity and inclusivity in STEM.

If you’re already highly specialized in one field or looking for a longer-term program, CURIE’s broader approach might feel less aligned with your goals.

Advice for Future Applicants

  1. Be Authentic in Your Application

Your essays are your chance to shine. Focus on your personal journey, your passion for STEM, and why CURIE aligns with your goals. Don’t just list accomplishments—share what drives you and how you’ve grown.

  2. Connect with Everyone

During the program, don’t be afraid to reach out to professors, PAs, and fellow participants. Whether it’s asking questions about Cornell or collaborating on projects, these connections can be invaluable.

  3. Take It All In

Explore the campus, participate fully in activities, and embrace even the sessions outside your primary interests. Every moment is a chance to learn and grow.

  4. Think Beyond the Week

CURIE is just the beginning. Use the resources and connections you gain to fuel your STEM journey, whether it’s applying to college, starting your own projects, or pursuing research.

Final Thoughts: Why CURIE Stands Out

CURIE Academy was more than a STEM program—it was an experience that connected me with a vibrant community of peers and mentors, deepened my passion for engineering, and gave me a glimpse of life at a world-class university. Whether it was collaborating on research, exploring Cornell’s campus, or simply chatting with my group during downtime, every moment contributed to a week I’ll never forget.

If you’re passionate about STEM and ready to embrace a week of learning, discovery, and connection, CURIE Academy might just be the perfect fit for you. Take the leap—you won’t regret it.

If you had the chance to attend a week-long STEM immersion program like CURIE Academy, which aspect would excite you the most?
